Firework Safety
Watching fireworks is popular and fun. But fireworks are explosives and burn at high temperatures, so they need careful handling and storage, please follow the instructions on the fireworks and read our safety information is in doubt please contact us.
Display Layout
The following display layout is recommended in the Health & Safety Booklet, "Giving Your Own Firework Display"
The size of the relative areas will depend on the nature of the fireworks being used, but for most fireworks sold by us the distance between the spectator area and the firing area should be a minimum of 25 metres.
The firework code:
- Light sparklers one at a time and wear gloves
- Never give sparklers to a child under 5
- Buy fireworks marked BS 7114
- Keep fireworks in a closed box
- Follow the instructions on each firework
- Light them at arm's length using a taper
- Stand well back
- Never go back to a lit firework
- Never put fireworks in your pocket
- Never throw fireworks
- Keep pets indoors
DTI Guidance
The DTI publishes comprehensive fireworks safety information at www.dti.gov.uk/fireworks.All fireworks sold in the UK must comply with British Standard BS7114. Every firework must have this printed on it.
It is illegal to sell fireworks to anyone under the age of 18 years.
It is illegal for anyone under the age of 18 to be in possession of fireworks in a public place.
It is illegal to set fireworks off between 11-pm and 7am except in the following cases:
- November 5th - Until Midnight
- New Years Eve - Until 1am on the following day
- Chinese New Year - Until 1am on the following day
- Diwali - Until 1am on the following day
It is an offence to cause unnecessary suffering to any domestic or captive animals.
It is illegal for Retailers to sell caps, crackers snaps, novelty matches, party poppers, serpents and throw downs to anyone under 16 years of age.
